My mama is by far one of the most beautiful women, inside and out, that I have ever known. This isn’t just because she’s my own mother either. Anyone that has ever known her has always said “you’re mama was the sweetest person!…and that smile!” When people say that to me it always makes my heart happy.
My mama and I use to tease that we were the president of each other’s fan club. She always told me I was so beautiful and I always wished I was a beautiful as her. Never did I feel that my efforts of being good enough would mount up to her. Understand now, it wasn’t because of pressure she put on me. Just the opposite, in fact. She was an encourager – a real Barnabus in her own right. She wanted us, my brother’s and I, to do our best and live for Christ. When I found myself doing the wrong thing or making wrong decisions the pain in my heart would swell up in fear of her disappointment. Funny thing is that when I admitted my wrong to her it was rarely disappointment she showed. She may reprimand, discipline and punish but it was always followed with a loving and encouraging hug to do better. Followed by her reassurance that she would ALWAYS love me – no matter what.
There were many, many things that my mama taught me in the endless hours that we talked. I am so blessed to have such a wise woman as my mother. In my opinion, she left this world way to early. She adored all of her grandchildren and had a very special place in her heart for her granddaughters. She desired with all her heart that they would grow into godly young women and that her grandsons would be godly men. I see my mama in my daughter and niece when they smile. They both are so very beautiful.
This blog is for Alex, Michael, Rachael, Elisabeth and Drew. Your Memaw loved you with her every breath. She wasn’t perfect but her love was perfect. You may read this and you may not but when the time is right I hope you find the encouragement that you need. …and when you read it I hope you can hear Memaw say “Have I told you today that I love you? Because, I do you know! Very much”
